Ciao Beavs Day 3: History and Culture at the Vatican
August 21, 2023 | Women's Basketball
ROME – Oregon State hit the road for Rome in the third day of its European adventure, taking in the Vatican in the team's first day in the city.
Â
The Beavs slept in and hopped on the bus for a three-hour ride from Naples to Rome. AJ Marotte instigated several lively games of mafia to pass the time and the team was at Rome in seemingly no time.
Â
Oregon State's travel guide for the remainder of the trip – Mattia – took over as the bus entered Rome, providing some historical context for both the city and professional basketball in Italy. The Beavs drove past the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, one of the major cathedrals in the city, on the way in.
After arriving at the Vatican, the Beavs broke for lunch before regrouping to tour the Vatican Museum. The day was a crowded one at the museum with many Europeans on vacation during August, but it remained an interesting learning experience as the team took in ancient works.
Â
The tour concluded with a look up at Michelangelo's famous ceiling on the Sistine Chapel, a four-year project that is considered one of the world's best works of art.Â
Â
The Beavers closed the day by admiring St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world and over an 100-year project to compete. After walking through the 240-yard space and appreciating the immense project and its art, the Beavs returned to their hotel and enjoyed dinner together.
Â
Tomorrow, the Beavers tour Rome and the Coliseum. For the latest on the trip to Italy and all things Oregon State Women's Basketball, follow @BeaverWBB on Instagram, Twitter, Threads and Facebook. Â
