Women’s Soccer Opens Season in Bay Area

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's soccer team opens the 2023 season with a pair of away contests, taking on San Francisco on Thursday at 6 p.m. before a matchup with No. 19 Santa Clara on Sunday at 1 p.m. to kickstart the new season.
Last Season
The 2022 season saw several key injuries hit the Beavs. The team fought for five victories, including the first in program history over Wyoming in the two teams first ever meeting. Junior McKenna Martinez earned her second-straight All-Pac-12 selection. After leading the Beavers in numerous categories, Martinez was selected Third Team All-Pac-12. Graduate Reese Moffatt signed professionally with Odense Boldklub of the Danish Superliga following her senior campaign with OSU.
Last Time Against San Francisco
Oregon State and San Francisco last met in 2017, a 1-0 win for the Beavs. Paula Leblic tilted the score in the Beavs favor in the 76th minute, hammering home a rebound off a freshman midfielder Kaillen Fried corner kick. With the win, former Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode passed Steve Fennah to become the Beavers' career wins leader.
Scouting San Francisco
The Dons were picked 6th by the WCC head coaches in their annual preseason poll.
Marissa Vasquez and Lindsey Chau were named to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
In 2022, Vasquez picked up All-WCC postseason honors for the second time as she led the Dons with seven goals and 14 total points on the year. Notably, she tallied her first collegiate hat trick on the road at Portland State on Aug. 18, 2022. Within the conference, Vasquez was tied for fourth with 29 shots on goal while also tying for seventh in goals and eleventh in total points.
Chau earned All-WCC Freshman Team honors and All-WCC Honorable Mention honors following her first campaign in the green and gold. Notably, Chau led the Dons with four assists on the year while also tying for second on the team with four goals.
Last Time Against Santa Clara
Sunday's match marks the 10th time these two programs will meet, with Oregon State seeking their first victory. In the last meeting back in 2011, the teams drew, 1-1, in a match played in Eugene.
Scouting Santa Clara
Santa Clara was the unanimous favorite to win the WCC, taking all first-place votes by the league's head coaches.
Colby Barnett, Annie Karich, and Sally Menti were selected to the Preseason All-WCC team as well. Barnett, Karich, and Menti were also named to the United Soccer Coaches Midfielders to Watch list.
