Mitchell, Fetherstonhaugh Record Top-5 National Times on Friday
April 28, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Kaylee Mitchell and Grace Fetherstonhaugh posted two of the country's top five times in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to highlight a strong first day for the Beavers in the OSU High Performance Meet.
Â
Mitchell's 9:39.45 set the Whyte Track & Field Center record in her final home race. It's just five seconds behind her time from the outdoor national championships last year. Fetherstonhaugh's 9:45.24 was just under eight seconds off her time from the 2022 championships.
Â
Jade Whitfield set the day's first Whyte Center record in the discus. The redshirt sophomore's 55.36m/181-7 continued a remarkably consistent season in which she has thrown at least 54 meters in every meet.
Â
Whitfield's facility record won the discus, followed by Katie Gelston in third and Keely McLaughlin in fourth. Gelston set a new personal best of 48.85m/160-3, which would rank fifth in the OSU Top 10 if the freshman was not competing unattached. McLaughlin came in fourth with a 46.00m/150-11 toss.
Â
Oregon State also saw encouraging performances in the sprints. Adael Scatena won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.14, just in front of teammate Taylor Weidinger. Weidinger's runner-up performance was a personal best with a 1:00.44, which moves her up two spots to fifth on the OSU Top 10.
Â
The jumpers picked up another 1-2 finish with Anneke Moersdorf and Delaney Bahn providing the top marks in the long jump. Moersdorf's 6.01m/19-8.75 won the event while Bahn's 5.95m/19-6.25 placed second. Bahn also raced to a 24.82 in the 200 meters, good for 10th on the all-time list.
Â
Christina Geisler closed the evening for the Beavers with a 16:33.63 in the 5,000 meters. It ranks tenth in the OSU Top 10, the second top 10 mark earned by the redshirt senior this season after running the second-best 10,000 meters at Stanford a month prior.
Â
The Beavers are back in action on Saturday at the Whyte Track & Field Center. Action begins with the men's javelin at 10 a.m. Oregon State will honor its senior class at 12:30 p.m. in the 5,000 meter start area (right behind the soccer and softball fields).
