Dr. Mary Budke To Be Inducted Into Pac-12 Hall Of Honor
February 23, 2023 | Women's Golf
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Dr. Mary Budke, who was a trailblazer in Oregon State women's golf, will be inducted into the Pac-12 Hall of Honor, the most prestigious recognition of on-field and off-field contributors to Pac-12 athletics.
Formal induction will take place on Friday, March 3 during a private ceremony, as part of the week-long Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament celebrations in Las Vegas, prior to that day's semifinal matchups. The class will also be celebrated during a special recognition at halftime of the day's first semifinal matchup at Michelob Ultra Arena inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Budke laid the foundation for the Oregon State women's golf program. As she said, there were no more than four players on the team during her college career, practice wasn't organized; it was on the individual. Budke also played volleyball and basketball during her time at Oregon State, but golf is where she thrived.
Before her national championship win, as a prep at Dayton High School she captured the state championship in 1971. She won three consecutive Oregon Junior Girl's Championships and advanced to the semifinals in the 1970 and 1971 U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.
Along with her numerous individual tournament titles, Budke captured the 1972 U.S. Women's Amateur tournament and the 1974 intercollegiate tournament. After coming in as runner up two years previously, she cinched the AIAW Championship in '74 by four strokes while competing for OSU. Budke was a member of the 1974 USA Curtis Cup Team that beat Britain and Ireland, she continued her Curtis Cup legacy and later captained the victorious USA Team in 2002.
The eight-time Oregon Amateur champion was the recipient of the Bill Hayward Award as Oregon's top amateur athlete in 1972. She was the lone woman and one of only three golfers to be honored in the history of the award as of '72, after Oregon track star Steve Prefontaine had been honored three times in four years. At the time of her Hayward Award she was ranked number one in the U.S. for amateurs.
Budke's accomplishments led to her induction into the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and Oregon Golf Hall of Fame in 1991, the National Golf Coaches Association Player Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. She also was presented with a lifetime individual membership at the Michalbrook Country Club in McMinnville.
The 2023 Pac-12 Hall of Honor is the first-ever all-female class, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX last June.
Here is the entire class: Susie Parra (softball, Arizona), Jackie Johnson-Powell (women's track & field, Arizona State), Dr. Luella Lilly (athletic administration, California), Ceal Barry (coach -- women's basketball/athletic administration, Colorado), Janie Takeda Reed (softball, Oregon), Dr. Mary Budke (women's golf, Oregon State), Jessica Mendoza (softball, Stanford), Natalie Williams (women's basketball/ volleyball, UCLA), Barbara Hallquist DeGroot (women's tennis, USC), Kim Gaucher (women's basketball, Utah), Danielle Lawrie (softball, Washington), Sarah Silvernail (women's volleyball, Washington State)
