Oregon State Drops Pair on Saturday
February 11, 2023 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. – On the second day of the LSU Invitational, No. 19 Oregon State dropped a pair of games to New Mexico and No. 25 LSU, respectively.
New Mexico took advantage of an error and plated a run following consecutive base hits to open their half of the first. The Lobos padded their lead with another from a sacrifice fly to center and a two-RBI triple.
In the Oregon State half of the third, the Beavers had their best chance to chip away at the deficit but left runners on the corners. New Mexico responded by adding four to the board to double the lead.
Ellie Garcia (0-1) was charged with the loss in her Oregon State debut. The Chino, Calif., native allowed eight runs (four earned), yielded seven hits and struck out a pair in 2.2 innings of work. Sarah worked 1.1 innings in relief, striking out a pair and allowing just a hit.
LSU broke open the scoring early against OSU in the second game of the day in the first inning. The Tigers spread their 12 runs over the first four frames – including five in the second – to take control of the contest.
Tarni Stepto (0-1) was charged with the loss, having surrendered seven runs, four hits and four free passes in more than an inning's worth of work. She faced three batters in the second before being relieved by Haendiges. In her second appearance on the day, Haendiges allowed five runs (all earned), five hits but fanned a pair.
Morgan Howey lined a single to left field, tallying her second consecutive game with a hit to open her collegiate career.
The Beavs will close play in the LSU Invitational tomorrow with games against Nicholls (8 a.m. PT) and LSU (10:30 a.m. PT). The second game can be seen nationally on SEC Network+.
