
Beavers Fall to Bruins

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's basketball team fell to UCLA 69-62 in their Pac-12 opener Thursday evening at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers led by four at halftime, and battled back from 14 points down in the second half to get back within striking distance but could not come away with the victory.
Dexter Akanno led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, knocking down four 3-pointers and going 6-for-6 from the free throw stripe. Tyler Bilodeau notched his second career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Jordan Pope finished with 13 points and four assists.
As a team, the Beavers shot 44 percent from the floor, and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
The teams traded punches through the first few minutes, as they headed to the first media timeout level at seven. The Oregon State defense clamped down from there, as OSU led 20-13 with 7:24 to go before the intermission.
The Beavers led by an many as nine in the opening 20 minutes before heading into the break up 28-24. Akanno led all first-half scorers with nine points.
UCLA wasted little time evening things up, and took a 37-35 led five minutes into the second half. The Bruins extended their advantage to 14 with nine minutes to play.
Oregon State scored seven unanswered points to get back within seven. The two sides went back and forth down the stretch, but the Beavers could not get any closer than seven as the Bruins claimed the victory.
Oregon State will remain at home Saturday for a matchup with USC.
