Good Weather, Strong Rowing Highlight Day in Seattle
November 05, 2023 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE, Wash. – Oregon State Men's Rowing closed its official fall racing season with a strong day in good weather at Head of the Lake in Seattle.
The Beaver men recorded two runner-up finishes in the Varsity 8 and 2V8 races. The two 3V8 boats placed fourth and fifth.
"Every 4-5 years this race has perfect conditions. Today was one of those days. Flat water and nice temps make for fast racing," said head coach Gabe Winkler. "All four boats came off the water feeling like they had a solid piece. The JV, 3V, and 4V raced not only Washington but a couple of Canada's best collegiate teams in UVic and UBC. Getting ahead of them is a good mark. Everyone does the same thing in the fall and then has the same routine in the spring. It's the winter when the variables start. What kind of work are we going to do for the next four months? This will dictate the boat speed in May and June."
The Beavers' V8 boat was solidly in runner-up territory, finishing 45 seconds behind the hosting Huskies but nearly another 45 seconds ahead of third-place Washington State. The 2V8 group narrowly knocked off University of Victoria for second, finishing just over six seconds in front of UVic.
The 3V8 boats both were in the hunt for third place before Washington edged them out by five seconds (over the OSU 'A' boat) and 10 seconds (over the 'B') boat.
Though this is Oregon State's final official race of the fall, the Beavs will compete again on the Willamette at the Orange and Black Regatta. Registration is open for alumni and supporters here.
