Nakao, Gomez Post Top 20 Finishes To Lead Beavers At Stanford
October 22, 2023 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – Raya Nakao and Chayse Gomez both recorded Top 20 finishes to lead the Oregon State women's golf team at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Beavers concluded their fall season with a 10th place finish after shooting a 17-over 293-281-295--869 at the par-71, 6,269-yard Stanford Golf Course. The 19-team field featured every team ranked in the Top 60 by GolfStat.com.
Oregon State finished three strokes better than No. 4-nationally ranked Oregon (+20, 872) at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Nakao, a true freshman from Kaneohe, Hawai'i, led Oregon State with a tie for 11th place finish after carding a 1-under 71-67-74--212 with a team-best 12 birdies. She had seven sub-par scores in the fall's five tournaments.
Her scoring average of 71.40 is on pace to break the Oregon State freshman record of 72.79 that was set by Ellie Slama in 2017-18.
Fifth-year senior Gomez finished in a tie for 14th place with an even-par 70-70-73--213 and tied for the most pars in the 100-player field with 39. She had a scoring average of 2.87 on the par-3's, tied for the fourth best in the tournament.
It's the third-straight Top 20 tournament for Gomez, after finishing in a tie for 13th place at the Molly Collegiate Invitational and a tie for 17th place at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Kyra Ly had the Beavers' best score in the final round, a 1-under 70, that moved her 12 spots up the leaderboard for a tie for 29th place finish with a 3-over 75-71-70--216. She had 10 birdies over the three rounds and nothing worse than a bogey.
Ly had a very solid fall season with two Top 10 finishes -- a tie for sixth place at the Leadership and Golf Invitational and a tie for fourth place at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate.
Madde Sund finished in a tie for 75th place with a 15-over 77-73-78--228 and true freshman Rebecca Kim posted a 31-over 82-81-81--244 to finish in 98th place.
No. 11 USC won the team title with a 9-under 843 and Catherine Park of USC claimed medalist honors with a 7-under 206.
The Beavers will next start their spring season in Kona, Hawai'i at the Pac-12 Preview, which is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 19 through Wednesday, Feb. 21.
