STANFORD, Calif. – Chayse Gomez fired a 1-under 70 and Raya Nakao was a stroke back with an even-par 71 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday.
The Beavers wrapped up the opening round with a 9-over 293 at the par-71, 6,269-yard Stanford Golf Course and are tied for 11th place. The competitive field features all 19 teams ranked in the Top 60 nationally in the latest GolfStat.com rankings.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Oregon State will be in the afternoon wave, start on the 10th hole at 12:40 p.m. and be paired with Arizona and Georgia.
Gomez, a fifth-year senior from Yorba Linda, Calif., has been on fire of late with six of her last eight rounds in red figures and back-to-back Top 20 finishes.
She was 2 over through her first 12 holes on Friday but pared 13 and 14, before dropping in three-straight birdies, and closed the day with a par on the challenging par-4, 422-yard 18th hole for a 71. Her birdies came on the par-4, 361-yard 15th, par-5, 503-yard 16th and par-3, 167-yard 17th holes.
Gomez is currently tied for 10th place and has 36 holes to record her sixth career Top 10 finish after posting four of them last season.
Nakao, a true freshman from Kaneohe, Hawai'i, is enjoying a spectacular first campaign at Oregon State with two Top 10 finishes in four events and six sub-par scores.
She had to battle in Friday's opening round, sitting at 3 over through the first four holes, before finishing the day with four birdies, nine pars and only one bogey for an even-par 72 that has her in a tie for 26th place.
Nakao's birdies came on the par-4, 355-yard ninth, par-4, 383-yard 10th, par-5, 477-yard 12th and par-5, 503-yard 16th holes. The four birdies were tied for the 14th most in the 100-player field.
Sophomore Kyra Ly and junior Madde Sund were the other two scores for the Beavers on Friday, as Ly finished with a 4-over 75 and Sund posted a 6-over 77. Sund had three birdies on the day, but also took three double-bogeys, while Ly rolled in two birdies to go with six bogeys.
