Oregon State Falls to No. 15 Arizona
January 06, 2023 | Women's Basketball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Oregon State took No. 15 Arizona to the wire and led by 12 late in the game but the Wildcats came back to win 72-69.
Raegan Beers posted her fourth straight double-double, a 19-point and 10-rebound effort, in the loss. AJ Marotte was just a point below her season-high and two under her career-high with 17 points.
Marotte carried the Beavers for much of the first half. The sophomore came off the bench and provided a huge offensive spark with 17 points at the break. The sophomore scored from all three levels of the floor, mixing layups, mid-range and a catch-and-shoot three as Oregon State built its lead from 12-11 to 25-15 with 6:05 remaining in the second quarter.
The Wildcats made a run late in the half to get within five, but Talia von Oelhoffen knocked down a three and Beers scored four points to end the half. OSU entered the break with a 38-30 lead.
The two teams traded blows in the third quarter. OSU went on an early 4-0 spurt and got key baskets from Beers, Jelena Mitrovic and Shalexxus Aaron. Then Arizona got back into the game, eventually tying it at 49 at the end of the period.
Beers controlled the game early in the fourth. The freshman scored 7 of OSU's first 11 points, making all three of her shots and a free throw as the Beavs took a 60-53 lead with 4:49 remaining in the game. Von Oelhoffen and Bendu Yeaney extended the lead to 12 with 3:57 left.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats had one more run in them, scoring 15 straight points to take a 68-65 lead. Oregon State had a chance to tie late, but a game-tying shot rimmed out and a contested rebound bounced off multiple players before falling to Arizona. The Wildcats hit a free throw and the Beavs couldn't get a clean look at another game-tying opportunity.
Up next, OSU will look to bounce back against Arizona State. The Beavers and Sun Devils tip at 10 a.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks.
