SEE IT BEav IT: Sheree Gillaspie
January 18, 2023 | Women's Rowing
Sheree Gillaspie hasn't rowed competitively for Oregon State since 1977, but she remains close to the program that played such a major part in her life in Corvallis and beyond.
"I am the co-chair of the OSU Rowing Alumni Group, and do a lot of volunteering with the rowing program including fundraising," said Gillaspie, a holistic nutritionist with the Nutrigenomics Wellness Company.
"I'm also the co-chair of the annual silent auction, which is the [program's] largest fundraiser."
Gillaspie rowed at OSU from 1973-77. She then returned to school in 2007 to become a holistic nutritionist and start a new path in life. She's a distributor for Nutrigenomics Wellness Company, which provides genetic analysis for optimum health via what Gillaspie terms "cutting-edge science."
"This has provided me and my family financial and time freedom," she said.
The company's mission statement says, "We dare to imagine an abundant world where both physical and financial health is optimized. We believe your well-being matters.
"That's why we've combined the cutting-edge research of nutrigenomics with a leveraged plan to build your own legacy. Because You Matter."
Gillaspie was voted as the team's Outstanding Oarswoman her senior year. She had seats on the Varsity 8 boat, which finished sixth at nationals, and the Open 4, which also advanced to nationals but did not place.
"My junior year I told my coach I would be working all summer to make the Open 8 my senior year and I did!" she said.
Gillaspie is being showcased in conjunction with OSU's SEE IT, BEav IT initiative, marking the 50th anniversary of Title IX. It will focus on celebrating the stories of OSU prominent women's athletes and athletics.
"Title IX set the stage for important growth, and we are grateful to all of the pioneers of women's athletics who helped create opportunities for our current generation of student-athletes," said OSU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Barnes.
"We look forward to sharing the stories of some of our outstanding past and present female student-athletes, coaches and staff members throughout the 2022-23 year."
Gillaspie said OSU was a huge part of her life for many reasons.
"The campus life was wonderful, the beauty and ROWING!," she said. "The rowing community quickly became my family while at OSU.
"I not only learned the skill of rowing, I learned how to be a part of a team and found I had the ability to give much more than I ever imagined.
"Many life lessons were learned in those four years on crew, which later influenced decisions in my life and still becomes more meaningful over time."
