Comeback Falls Short Against Huskies
January 15, 2023 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State nearly fought its way back into Sunday's game against Washington but the Beavers couldn't overcome the hot-shooting Huskies in a 79-67 loss. Â
Â
Talia von Oelhoffen led OSU with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals. Timea Gardiner had her first double figure game as a Beav with 10 points.
Â
The Huskies couldn't miss early on, nailing all nine of their shots before the first quarter media timeout to lead 20-10 early in the game. Â Oregon State got an early boost from freshman post Timea Gardiner, who punished a much smaller defender for six quick points. Von Oelhoffen also got going quickly with seven points, highlighted by a long floater as the clock expired.
Â
Washington's hot shooting continued into the second. UW opened the quarter on an 8-0 run to go up 37-23 and force an OSU timeout. The Huskies entered the half with a 49-29 lead and were shooting 65.5 percent from the field at the break.
Â
Oregon State rebounded a bit in the third quarter, but the Beavs weren't able to make a noticeable impact on the Husky lead. Bendu Yeaney provided most of the offense with five points in the period, which OSU won by a point.
Â
The Beavers didn't give in late in what could have easily turned into a blowout. OSU cut the lead to 15 with a 6-0 spurt early in the period with four points from von Oelhoffen and then cut the UW lead as low as eight on a von Oelhoffen three in transition.
Â
Noelle Mannen picked up a steal to give OSU the ball back down eight with a minute left, but multiple three-pointers missed the mark late to allow the Huskies to run out the clock.
Â
Up next, Oregon State welcomes Oregon to Gill Coliseum for its first Pac-12 rematch of the year. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. on Friday, January 20.
