Cougars Pull Away Late to Beat Beavs

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Washington State pulled away in the fourth quarter to knock off Oregon State 63-56 on Friday night.
The game for the Beavers was highlighted by the debut of Timea Gardiner, the No. 6 prospect in the class of 2022. Gardiner was greeted with a loud cheer by the Beaver faithful before contributing nine points, three rebounds and two assists in a strong debut.
Bendu Yeaney led Oregon State with 11 points, the lone Beaver in double figures. AJ Marotte contributed nine points on 4-of-7 shooting while Raegan Beers added eight with 12 rebounds.
Oregon State led early, getting five quick points from Shalexxus Aaron and Yeaney to take a 12-3 lead with 4:45 left in the first. The Cougs roared back later in the period, cutting the Beaver lead to 16-14 at the end of the first.
WSU's momentum continued into the second quarter with the Cougars taking a 20-16 lead early in the half before taking a 29-23 advantage with 3:22 remaining. The Beavs got a boost late in the frame from Gardiner, who pulled down a rebound and drained a three on the fast break before making another late jumper that gave the Beavs a 30-29 lead. The freshman and Marotte combined for a 9-0 run to end the half and go to the break with a 32-29 lead.
The third quarter was a back and forth battle where neither team took a lead greater than three points. Yeaney and Gardiner each contributed four points in the quarter, which saw the Cougars exit with a 46-45 lead.
WSU took the game's momentum early in the fourth quarter, using a 11-0 spurt to go up 12 points. From there, the Cougars matched Oregon State basket for basket the rest of the way to take home the win. Talia von Oelhoffen hit a couple late shots to get OSU back within striking distance but the Beavs couldn't close the rest of the gap.
Up next, OSU hosts Washington on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.
