May 16, 2022 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO — Oregon State softball senior Mariah Mazon has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, as announced Monday. The conference nods are her fifth and sixth of her career and second and third this season.
With the pair of conference nods, the Beavers have now earned eight weekly honors this season.
Mazon collects the honor following a weekend for the record books. The Tulare, Calif. native struck out a combined 21 batters in three appearances (15.1 IP), collecting two wins in the Beavers' series with Utah to conclude the regular season. She surrendered 14 hits and six walks, giving up one earned run.
The senior now has a grand total of 833 career strikeouts, needing 20 to break the Oregon State record of 852 set by Brianne McGowan (04-07).
Mazon was impressive in the series opener on Thursday, May 12 as the Beavers came from behind in dramatic fashion to win 8-7 at Kelly Field. She earned her 13th victory of the season after coming in for relief in the fifth inning, pitching six frames. She gave up five hits and four runs, walking two and struck out 12 Utes. From the plate, she led the offense with a 4-for-5 performance with a career-best two long balls, four runs batted in and three runs scored.
In three games, Mazon led the team in hits (6-for-9), RBIs (7), runs (4) and home runs (3). Mazon slugged an exceptional 1.667, registering 15 total bases with a .667 batting average.
Mazon and the rest of the Beavers turn their attention to the program's 15th postseason appearance when they travel to the Knoxville, Tenn. on Friday, May 20. Oregon State faces Ohio State at 4 p.m. as the No. 3 seed, joining host No. 11 Tennessee and Campbell in the NCAA Regional.
The winner of the double-elimination NCAA Regional will move on to the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional against the winner of the Tuscaloosa Regional. The Women's College World Series will be played in Oklahoma City, Okla., June 2-9/10.
