Oregon State's Final Inning Push Comes Up Short in UCLA Series Finale
April 24, 2022 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 20 Oregon State softball team scored two runs in the seventh, but was unable to pull off the comeback win over No. 4 UCLA Sunday afternoon, as the Bruins swept the series with a 4-3 victory at Kelly Field.
The last six Pac-12 games for the Beavers have been decided by a single run as OSU drops to 31-15 overall and 7-11 during conference play.
The Beavers trailed 2-0 heading into the second, but a walk and a pair of Bruin miscues pulled the Orange & Black within one.
UCLA responded with insurance runs in the third and sixth innings. A trio of stranded runners in the third, a pair of runners in the fourth and a base runner in the sixth proved to be costly for the Beavers. Â
Junior Frankie Hammoude lead the seventh off, drawing a walk, while Grace Messmer cracked a single up the middle. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Des Rivera delivered a single to right field to plate Hammoude. Madison Simon sent a high sacrifice fly in right, driving in Messmer as OSU trailed by one with just one out.
Back-to-back strikeouts from UCLA ended the Beaver comeback.
Senior Mariah Mazon suffered the loss after dealing the complete game with five hits and six strikeouts.Â
Â
The Beavers hit the road next weekend for a three-game series at Oregon. The first game of that series will take place on Friday at 6 p.m. in Eugene. Â
