Oregon State Falls in Extras at Arizona State Sunday

TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 23-ranked Oregon State softball fell in a heartbreaking extra-inning 9-6 decision in the series finale at No. 22 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon as the Beavers drop to 22-7 overall this season.
The Orange & Black strung together a game-high 11 hits, including home runs from Grace Messmer, Frankie Hammoude and Madison Simon.
Tarni Stepto was dealt her second loss of the season after tossing the complete eight-inning game. The Aussie allowed nine runs off nine hits to go along with six walks and a pair of strikeouts after facing 36 batters.
Seven different players accounted for OSU's 11 hits, including a team-high 3-for-4 performance from freshman Kiki Escobar. Hammoude and Messmer both brought in a team-high two runs while Erin Mendoza came home on two separate occasions.
ASU got things started in the first, adding a pair of runs in the bottom half before pushing its lead to three after three frames.
Messmer evened the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth with a two-run shot over center field before Lici Campbell ripped an RBI double.
Oregon State added a pair in the fifth in part to Hammoude's two-out and two-run shot to right field as the Beavers led 5-3 after five and a half.
After the Sun Devils and Beavers traded runs in the bottom sixth and top seventh, ASU forced extras with a pair in the seventh off three hits. Arizona State sealed the series sweep with a three-run shot to right.
The Beavers stay in Arizona for one last game at Grand Canyon on Monday, March 21 at 2 p.m. before returning home next weekend for a Pac-12 weekend series with Stanford.
