March 18, 2022 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. - The 23-ranked Beavers strung together five hits, including a pair of home runs at No. 24 Arizona State, but fell short, as Oregon State dropped a 5-3 decision at Farrington Stadium in the Pac-12 opener Friday night.
Sophomore Tarni Stepto struck out three in three innings, allowing five runs, three hits and five walks to suffer her second loss of the season. Freshman Sarah Haendiges came in for relief in the fourth, striking out four and didn't allow a single hit.
Four different players accounted for OSU's five hits, including a team-high 2-for-3 performance from freshman Eliana Gottlieb.
ASU scored four in the first inning while adding an insurance run in the third to help seal its ninth win in a row. The Beavers scattered their runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.
With two outs, Gottlieb singled to center to drive in Jade Soto to make it 4-1 in the third. The Beavers would end up placing runners on the corners in the fourth frame, but a strikeout for the Sun Devils ended the inning.
Gottlieb went yard for her fifth time this season in the fifth with two outs before Charity Sevaaetasi added another solo shot in the sixth.
The Beavers and Sun Devils square off again tomorrow at 4 p.m. PT followed by the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. Arizona State's live stream will be available for both matches, with the link on the softball schedule page.
