Oregon State Uses 18-Point 4th to Clip Cardinal
October 09, 2022 | Football
Down 24-10 heading into the final stanza, Oregon State (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) rattled off 18 of the game's next 21 points to win their first conference game of the season.
Ben Gulbranson – making his first start of the season – completed 20 passes for 250 yards and a pair of scores to lead the Beavers in the comeback win, including the 56-yard connection to Harrison for the game-winning score. Harrison led the Oregon State receivers with 104 yards through the air, including the score that finally separated the sides. On the ground, Deshaun Fewnick dashed for 83 yards on just three carries – including a 43-yard dash to the endzone in the fourth quarter.
As a team, Oregon State amassed 442 yards of offense – including 250 from the air.
Stanford opened the scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter, and Oregon State answered with a Jack Colletto one-yard scamper for the score to bring it to a tie at 7. A pair of Cardinal scores – a field goal and trip to the endzone – gave the hosts a 17-7 lead at the break. Atticus Sappington cut into the Stanford lead with a 40-yard field goal to bring the Beavers within a touchdown and a PAT.
After the Cardinal went up 14 with a late-third quarter score, the Beavers' comeback was about to get started.
Gulbranson and Silas Golden connected for a 21-yard trip to the endzone, but OSU failed the two-point conversion and found themselves down just six with ten seconds gone in the final quarter. Nearly nine minutes later, Damien Martinez sprinted for 43 yards for a touchdown of his own to bring the Beavers within two. On the Cardinal's ensuing drive, they dashed down the field for a 46-yard field goal to ice the game, but the Beavers had other plans.
Without any timeouts and the clock ticking, Gulbranson led the Beavers down the field for the win. Oregon State needed 76 yards for six points, and Harrison's 56-yard reception to the end zone was what the Beavers needed for the lead.
Following a failed two point try, Stanford saw their comeback chances thwarted by a Ryan Cooper Jr. interception as time expired.
Oregon State will return home to play Washington State next Saturday, October 15. Kickoff from Reser Stadium is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on Pac-12 Networks.
