June 02, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Oregon State University Athletics, in conjunction with Beaver Sports Properties, is excited to announce the first installment of "Beaver WBB Classics" (BWB). BWB is the rebroadcast of the Beaver Sports Radio Network coverage, brought to you by your local Toyota Dealers of some of the top Oregon State women's basketball games.
This week's BWC is from March 28, 2016, when the Beavers took down Baylor 60-57 to punch their ticket to the program's first ever Final Four.
The rebroadcast is available on the Beaver Sports Podcast page on OSUBeavers.com under the Fan Zone tab. The game will also air on TuneIn, SiriusXM, and via many of the Beaver Sports Radio Network stations (check station schedules for exact time), including 1240 KEJO in Corvallis Saturday at Noon.
Â
How They Got There:
The Beavers' 2015-16 season was certainly one for the record books. The team won its second-straight Pac-12 regular season title and took its first ever Pac-12 Tournament championship on its way to a o. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament placed the Beaver against Troy and Saint Bonaventure at Gill Coliseum. Oregon State took care of both of those opponents, before exploding for an 83-71 victory over DePaul in the Sweet 16.
Â
The Matchup:
Oregon State faced No. 1 seed Baylor in a hostile environment, as the teams met in Dallas, Texas, a drivable distance from the Baylor campus. The Lady Bears entered the contest with a record of 36-2 and were making their third-straight Elite Eight appearance.
Â
The Beaver Squad:
Oregon State's 2015-16 squad featured some of the greatest player in program history, including four All-Americans. Jamie Weisner (Scott) was the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year, as well as the Pac-12 Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Fellow senior Ruth Hamblin was the two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, and the conference's record for career blocks.
Â
Sydney Wiese, then in her junior season, was already a three-time All-Pac-12 selection. Senior Deven Hunter was one of the leading rebounders in program history, and Gabriella Hanson was one of the best defenders in the nation, and would go on to be named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year the following season. Coming off the bench was sophomore Marie Gulich, who would go on to earn All-America honors in her senior season.
Â
Hamblin, Gulich, Weisner and Wiese were all drafted into the WNBA.
Â
The Game:
The Beavers led the majority of the game, including a 34-25 halftime advantage. The contest was tied a 57 with 33 seconds remaining. Wiese hit three clutch free throws in the closing moments to give Oregon State the lead, and the Beavers forced a desperation 3-point attempt as time expired to take the win.
