Gill Goes All-Around, Beavers Score 196.750
March 06, 2020 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State, ranked 14th in the country, fell to No. 12 Washington Friday night at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers went 24-for-24 for the third time this season and senior Sabrina Gill performed in the all-around for the first time in more than two years but it wasn't enough as the Beavers fell short 197.250-196.750.
Gill, a senior from Oakville, Ontario, was a late sub for freshman Kayla Bird, who was feeling under the weather, on the floor exercise pushing her into the all-around competition for the first time since her sophomore year. She finished with an all-around score of 39.250, not far off her career-best of 39.375.
"I'm really happy with how this team competed tonight. They fought to the very end and gave everything they had tonight," acting head coach Michael Chaplin said. "But ultimately, for us to be our best we still have to show improvement with sticks our landings, especially on the vault. We are leaving too many tenths of points out there and they add up. If we can clean that up it's a whole different outcome for us."
The Beavers opened the meet with a solid, if not spectacular, vault rotation. Lacy Dagen, returned to the lineup after missing last week's meet, to lead the squad with a team-high 9.875. Madi Dagen added a 9.850 and Kaitlyn Yanish notched a 9.775 to pace the Orange & Black to an opening rotation 49.000.
OSU moved to the uneven bars where the Beavers suffered a couple hiccups in the middle of the order. However, back-to-back-to-back outstanding routines punctuated by stuck dismounts by Alyssa Minyard, Halli Briscoe and Gill brought scores of 9.850, 9.850 and 9.90.
Trailing 98.400-98.025 at the halfway point, Isis Lowery led off the balance beam in the third rotation with a meet-high, and career-best tying 9.90. Jenna Domingo and Lacy Dagen each added matching scores of 9.875 and Gill and Maela Lazaro returned to the lineup, after sitting out last week, with a 9.850.
Oregon State concluded the meet on the floor exercise. For the second consecutive rotation, the Beavers' leadoff performer tallied a 9.90 with Kristina Peterson setting a career-high. Yanish celebrated her 21st birthday in style with a 9.90 of her own to bookend the lineup. Lowery delighted the crowd with a glorious 9.925 routine and Madi Dagen earned a score of 9.850.
Oregon State remains at home again next week, making it three straight home meets to finish the regular season. The Beavers host Illinois at Gill Coliseum on Senior Day on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
