February 07, 2020 | Wrestling
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Oregon State Wrestling fell 26-16 to the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Friday night in Bakersfield, California.
The Beavers picked up four wins at 125, 133, 141 and 197 pounds. Grant Willits earned his seventh straight victory of the season and Devan Turner bounced back with a win after dropping his last two bouts.
Brandon Kaylor continued his impressive season at 125 pounds and picked up his fourth straight victory with a 5-2 decision over Alejandro Hernandez-Figueroa. Kaylor came out with a mission as he collected two takedowns and accumulated a late stalling point over CSUB's Hernandez-Figueroa to put three quick team points on the board.
An anticipated matchup at 133 pounds ended with No. 16 Devan Turner earning a 5-3 over No. 32 Chance Rich. Turner put together a strong series of attacks early in the bout including a takedown and escape to head into the third period with momentum up 4-1. The redshirt junior closed out the bout with 1:05 of riding time to earn his 20th win of the season.
Willits dominated at 141 pounds against Angelo Martinoni for a 12-2 major decision. Willits put on a clinic in the first period by racking up consecutive four-point nearfalls and a takedown to head into the second up 12-0 which would end up being the deciding factor. After three bouts, the Beavers led 10-0.
Lane Stigall picked up a pair of late escapes but it wasn't enough to push past CSUB's Russell Rohlfing who earned eight points in the final period to lock up a 13-5 major decision.
A crucial match at 157 pounds gave CSUB the momentum as Wyatt Gerl pinned Logan Meek (5:26) which evened up the match at 10-10.
Aaron Olmos showcased his usual resiliency after the intermission but dropped a close bout to Jacob Thalin, 7-5. Olmos used a takedown and escape to lead heading into the third period but Thalin would rally for the victory despite an Olmos reversal with under a minute.
Albert Urias got the best of Jackson McKinney as a third-period pin (6:14) would be the difference and extend the Roadrunner's lead to 19-10. McKinney tied up the bout 4-4 at the start of the final period before Urias added six more points for CSUB.
After returning to the lineup after two weeks, Colt Doyle dropped a 12-4 major decision to CSUB's Josh Loomer. Doyle earned an early takedown and escape but couldn't overcome Loomer's 1:21 of riding time.
At 197 pounds, J.J. Dixon earned six team points for Oregon State as Dom Ducharme exited within twenty seconds of the bout due to injury default.
Jamarcus Grant ended the dual by dropping a 9-6 decision to Jarrod Snyder. Grant rallied for six points with under a minute left in the bout with a pair of takedowns and two-point nearfall but Snyder's 3:04 of riding time proved to be the difference.
Next Up: The Beavers look to bounce back in another Pac-12 matchup this Sunday, Feb. 7 against Stanford in Palo Alto, CA. The match will be televised on Stanford's live stream and will get underway at 2:00 pm PT.
