Canada and Puerto Rico will look to punch ticket to Tokyo
CORVALLIS – Jamie (Weisner) Scott and Ali Gibson will look to help their teams qualify for the Olympics this week, as FIBA hosts its Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
Â
Scott will represent Canada at the tournament in Ostend, Belgium, while Gibson will be at the qualifier in Bourges, France as a member of the Puerto Rico squad.
Â
The tournaments in Ostend and Bourges are two of the four qualifiers, each of which are made up of four teams. Twelve of the 16 competing teams will advance to this summer's Olympics in Tokyo. Every game of qualification can be watched on ESPN+.
Â
Canada has been placed in a group with Japan, Sweden and Belgium. The Japanese squad has already qualified for the Olympics as the host nation, leaving Canada, Sweden and Belgium to battle over two qualification spots available in Ostend. Puerto Rico will join Brazil, France and Australia in Bourges, with the top three teams in the group punching a ticket to Tokyo.
Â
During her time at Oregon State, Scott was named a WBCA All-American her senior year, as well as Pac-12 Player of the Year. The guard was a two-time All-Pac-12 honoree, and finished her career with 1,777 career points, the seventh best total in school history, and the No. 37 total in the history of the Pac-12. Scott is also among the top-10 in Pac-12 history in career 3-pointers.
Â
Gibson helped engineer a renaissance in the Oregon State women's basketball program, culminating in a Pac-12 title her senior season. She started all 131 games the Beavers played in her four seasons with the team, amassing 1,262 points, good for 11th in school history.
