Cathedral City, Calif. – Oregon State softball (8-4) battle for nine innings but eventually drop a bought to No.18/19 Missouri on Friday morning, 5-4.
The Beavers got a jump on the Tigers early scoring four in the top of the first inning. It was started by sophomore Maia Rader leading off with a first-pitch single past Missouri's shortstop. Freshman Xiao Gin singled back to the pitcher while advancing Rader to second. Both advanced another base to put themselves in scoring position off a throwing error. Junior Missy Nunes smacked a double into deep right field to score both Rader and Gin giving OSU a 2-0 lead with no outs.
Junior Mariah Mazon followed with a single through the left side to put runners on the corners. Grace Messmer advanced Mazon to second but was out on the play at first. With runners on second and third and only one out, Rylee Maston hit a double into right center to score Nunes and Mazon. The Beavers held a 4-0 lead after one.
Mizzou started its comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles into the outfield. A double hit into center scored both runners. Missouri was able to get another runner on off a fielding error on OSU to put runners on the corners. The third run was brought in off a wild pitch that advanced the runner on first to second. The runner on second scored the tying run off a single up the middle.
OSU attempted to get the lead back in the fifth inning with sophomore Ashton Phillips and Rader each hitting a single to put two runners on. Gin executed a sac bunt to advance the runners to second and third, but Oregon State left them stranded.
Missouri came close to taking to the lead in the bottom half of the inning after a walk and an error put two runners on with only one out. OSU completed a double play to get out of the inning though after Rader fielded a ground at third, stepped on the bag and made the throw over to Morgan Allen at first to complete the play.
OSU made one final charge in the top of the seventh inning with sophomore Izzy Owen reaching on an error to lead things off. Phillips reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop as Owen was out at second. Despite getting a runner on, OSU wasn't able to bring her around to score.
Mizzou made a surge in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff double put a runner on second. Mazon struck out the second batter she faced that inning, but MU eventually loaded the bases with only one out. Messmer fielded a hard bouncer up the middle and made the throw to Val Pero at home to get the lead runner and keep the bases loaded. Phillips made the final catch in center field to eliminate the loaded bases threat.
Things remained scoreless after the full seven, taking the teams into extra innings. Following the international tiebreaker rule, the athlete responsible for the final out of the previous inning is placed on second base.
Phillips started on second for OSU, but the Beavers weren't able to move her any further on the bases.
In the bottom of the eighth, Missouri started with a sac bunt to advance the runner to third. Mazon came up with another strikeout for the second out. She finished the inning fielding a bouncer back at her and made the throw to Allen.
In the ninth, OSU advanced our runner to third, but that was as far as she would make it.
Missouri sealed the deal in the bottom of the ninth after Mizzou got runners on the corners and hit a base hit up the middle.
Mazon started in the circle for OSU and pitched all 8.2 innings with eight strikeouts as she falls to 4-4 on the season.
