The Cougars scored the game's final three runs, in the seventh and eighth innings. Nathan Burns started for Oregon State and struck out seven in five innings - he did not figure in the decision.
Against Mississippi State
Friday's game marks just the fifth all-time between the programs. The previous four games all occurred in Omaha, in 2013 and 2018. The Bulldogs took two games from the Beavers in 2013, 5-4 and 4-1, knocking OSU out. Oregon State then knocked out Mississippi State in 2018 in a pair of elimination games, 12-2 and 5-2.
Against The SEC
Oregon State is taking on an SEC school for the first time since 2018 when going 6-1 combined against LSU, Mississippi State and Arkansas a year after going 3-2 versus Vanderbilt and LSU. The Beavers, however, are meeting an SEC school in the regular season for the first time since taking 2-of-3 from Tennessee in 2010 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU last traveled to an SEC school in 2012 when visiting LSU for an NCAA Regional.
Hitting Safely In All Four
Alex McGarry, Ryan Ober and Kyler McMahan all hit safely in the Beavers' four games in Surprise. Ober and McMahan each tied for the team lead with seven hits while in AZ, while McGarry's four doubles led the team. McGarry, meanwhile, has a seven-game hit streak dating back to the 2019 season. He is 10-for-28 (.357) with four doubles and five RBI over that stretch.
Freshmen On The Hill
Oregon State had six freshmen make their collegiate debuts over the four games in Arizona. They combined to work 10 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs (2.53 ERA) with nine strikeouts.
Singles
• Oregon State is in the midst of an 11-game stretch away from home. The Beavers last opened a season with 11 away from home in 2016.
• Christian Chamberlain is 6-1 in his career with a 2.07 ERA in non-conference games. He has 77 strikeouts in 61 innings.
