LA QUINTA, Calif. – The Oregon State men's golf team finished in a tie for 11th place at The Prestige, which concluded Wednesday.
The Beavers shot an 8-over 290-278-292--860 at the par-71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West to tie No. 25 LSU for 11th place.
No. 16 Texas won the 16-team event with a 20-under 832 and Leo Oyo of San Diego State claimed medalist honors with an 11-under 202.
"The margin for error is so small and we just didn't execute at a high enough level today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoon said. "As we've come out of the winter, we don't seem to be playing with the same level of confidence we did in the fall. We found it yesterday for a bit, but need to keep working to put it all together for three rounds.
"There are plenty of positives to take from this week, as we bounced back well from Hawai'i and were playing right with the top teams in the country."
Spencer Tibbits (68-70-74) and Jackson Lake (77-66-69) both led the Beavers with a tie for 21st place after carding a 1-under 212 at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
"I'm really excited about the performance by Jackson," Reehoorn said. "Each time he faced a difficult shot today, he made a strong, committed swing and hit excellent shots. For the first time in the lineup this is a great start and should allow him to continue to build the confidence to know he belongs competing with the best."
Kyosuke Hara finished in a tie for 39th place with a 2-over 74-67-74--215, Carson Barry shot a 10-over 73-75-75--223 to finish in 66th place and Sean Kato concluded the tourney with a 15-over 75-78-75--228 for 73rd place.
Nolan Thoroughgood finished in a tie for 20th place with a 4-over 77-72-71--220 while competing in an individual tournament at the par-72, 7,144-yard Coral Mountain Golf Club.
"We have the next month playing closer to home in conditions we will be accustomed to, and I know the group will put in the work required to make the necessary adjustments," Reehoorn said.
The Beavers have a long break before their next tournament, the Bandon Dunes Collegiate, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 8 through Tuesday, March 10 in Bandon, Ore.
