Troy Claunch hit his second home run of the season and Kyler McMahan went 3-for-5 but the Beavers dropped a 10-4 decision to Gonzaga Saturday afternoon. Claunch hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning. McMahan, meanwhile, singled twice and added a double. Jake Mulholland took the loss after working 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs.
Claunch's Hot Start
Troy Claunch came into the season with three career home runs and 19 runs batted in. He's close to eclipsing both numbers with two home runs and seven RBI. The junior is 4-for-7 over his first two games. He has three extra-base hits (also collecting a double Friday) on the year.

Sunday's game is the second of four this season versus the Bulldogs, with the second pair coming April 13 and 14 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. It's the first time the teams will meet four times in the same season since 2004 when the Beavers won 3-of-4.

The Beavers ended Gonzaga's top half of the second Saturday on a unique appeal play. Joe Casey made a diving catch in left, and Oregon State ended the frame when it was ruled that Gonzaga's Jack Machtolf missed second base on his return to first.
Freshman Relievers
Oregon State trotted out a quartet of freshmen relievers making their collegiate debuts on Saturday. Ryan Brown, Jack Washburn, Will Frisch and Kai Murphy all worked in relief of Jake Mulholland. Overall, including junior Reid Sebby, five different pitchers have seen their first Division I action over the first two games of the season.

Both Alex McGarry (five games) and Troy Claunch (four games) are on hitting streaks that have carried over from last season. McGarry has a home run and three RBI during his streak. Claunch has two home runs, a double and eight RBI during his.
