Alex McGarry and Troy Claunch each homered to pace Oregon State past New Mexico, 11-4, in the season opener on Friday afternoon. Claunch was 3-for-4 with a career-best four runs batted in. Christian Chamberlain allowed one hit and one run in six innings for the win. McGarry homered in the first and Claunch hit his round tripper in the second inning. Oregon State jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning.
First Start
Jake Mulholland, Saturday's probable starter, is making the first start of his career. The senior lefty has appeared in 87 career games for the Beavers, amassing 144 innings where he has allowed 104 hits and 34 walks to 127 strikeouts. He is 12-6 and sports a 1.75 earned run average, which is the best mark in OSU history among pitchers with 140 or more innings of work.
Against Gonzaga
The Beavers and Bulldogs are meeting for the third consecutive season after splitting a pair of games in 2019. It's the first time the teams will meet on back-to-back days since OSU opened the 2011 season in Fresno with a pair of wins.

Speaking of meetings with Gonzaga, the Beavers are 7-3 against the Bulldogs dating back to 2008. Three of the seven wins have come by one run.

Oregon State's freshmen Micah McDowell and Cesar Valero Sanchez both started and combined for three hits, three runs, an RBI and a stolen base in Friday's win.

Oregon State rapped out 11 runs on 12 hits in the season opener. It's the first time since a 10-6 win at Hawai'i in 2010 that the Beavers reached double-figure runs on opening day.
