Oregon State comes up just short on final drive

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State football team fell to Stanford 27-24 Saturday evening in a hard-fought game at Reser Stadium.

The teams went back-and-forth for the entire contest, and the Beavers had the ball in Stanford territory with less than 30 seconds remaining, but a late fumble secured the victory for the Cardinal.

Chance Nolan threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns in his second career start. The redshirt sophomore added another 50 yards on the ground.

Tre'Shaun Harrison finished with five receptions for 91 yards, while Tyjon Lindsey had three catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Jermar Jefferson rushed for 80 yards on 18 carries.

Nahshon Wright and Omar Speights led the Beavers with seven tackles apiece. Kitan Oladapo recorded six tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

The Oregon State offense got off to a fast start, opening the game with an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Stanford answered on the following possession to bring the score to 7-6 Beavers.

The Beaver defense clamped down from there, holding the Cardinal to just a field goal in the remainder of the first half, as OSU headed to the break up 14-9.

Stanford retook the lead early in the second half, scoring a touchdown less than three minutes into the third quarter. The Beavers responded immediately, regaining the advantage on a touchdown strike from Nolan to Lindsey.

The two sides traded punches from there. The Cardinal kicked a field goal to go in front 27-24 with 1:48 to go, and Oregon State drove the ball into Stanford territory as the clock ran down, but a Cardinal locked down the win by recovering a fumble with 23 seconds to play.

The Beavers will be back in action next week for a game to be determined by the Pac-12 at a later time.
