Beavers Fall Short to Cowboys

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State Wrestling showcased a gritty effort but fell short against Wyoming, 18-13, inside Gill Coliseum on Friday night.
In front of a crowd of over 1103, the Beavers won four bouts on the night but couldn't string together a late comeback. Grant Willits won his sixth straight match of the year with a 12-10 decision over Wyoming's Jaron Jensen and Brandon Kaylor impressed with his third major decision of the season at 125 pounds.
The match began at 165 pounds as Aaron Olmos started things off on a positive note in a 6-4 overtime victory to put three quick team points on the board. Olmos fought until the final whistle and recorded a clutch takedown with one second left to earn the victory.
At 174 pounds, No. 10 Hayden Hastings defeated Jackson McKinney by decision, 6-3, to even up the match. The Cowboys' Tate Samuelson would then won his bout over Colton Beisley, 8-3, with over two minutes of riding time.
J.J. Dixon followed at 197 pounds and put together a promising performance against Wyoming's Stephen Buchanan but ultimately fell short, 9-5.
At heavyweight, Jamarcus Grant couldn't piece together points in the third period and fell 2-1 to Brian Andrews. A riding time point was the lone difference for Grant as the match headed into intermission with the top of the lineup coming next.
After the break, Brandon Kaylor put on a show by igniting the crowd with his third major decision of the year, 15-7, over Jacob Svihel. The 125-pounder improved to 12-5 on the year thanks to an impressive six takedowns and 1:24 of riding time.
In a battle of ranked wrestlers, No. 8 Montorie Bridges took a 7-4 decision over No. 13 Devan Turner. Bridges amassed over two minutes of riding time despite Turner battling throughout the match with a two-point nearfall and a pair of escapes in the third period.
Grant Willits took care of Trevor Jeffries to win his six straight match of the season at 141 pounds. The Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week picked up a reversal and four-point nearfall in the second period and notched three late escapes in the third period to take the 12-10 decision.
Lane Stigall earned over three minutes of riding time in his bout to win 9-3 over No. 20 Jaron Jensen. Stigall notched a takedown in each period and locked up a riding time point for his 12th win of the year.
To end the dual, Wyoming's Dewey Krueger defeated Logan Meek by decision, 8-3.
