Turner, Willits Claim Sixth at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.– The Oregon State wrestling team (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12) notched three podium finishes to highlight action at the 2020 Southern Scuffle on Thursday in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The No.7-seed Devan Turner along with Hunter Willits both finished in sixth place in their respective weight class.
Following Turner and Willits, Colt Doyle (eighth, 184) also placed as Oregon State finished tied for 18th as a team with Virginia Military Institute. The Beavers amassed 33 team points over two days.
Hunter Willits began his day in the consolation bracket at 157 pounds where he secured two decisions of 11-4 and 5-2 to stay alive on the final day of competition.
Willits amassed over three minutes of riding time in the first two bouts and moved into the consolation semifinals where he ultimately dropped his second match of the tournament by major decision to Oklahoma State's Wyatt Sheets, 8-0.
Competing unattached, Willits would end the tournament in sixth place after dropping a match to North Dakota State's Luke Weber to finish with a team-best record of 4-2 for the tournament.
At 133 pounds, Devan Turner would also take sixth place after beginning his day in the championship semifinals. The redshirt junior earned a podium finish after dropping to the fifth-place match and would finish 3-3 for the tournament.
Colt Doyle took eighth place at 174 pounds after starting the day with a medical forfeit in the consolation bracket. Doyle dropped his next two bouts but secured an eighth-place finish for the tournament.
Next Up:
Oregon State is back in action on Sunday, Jan. 5 for a Big Ten dual against Michigan. Wrestling is slated for 2:00 p.m. PT from Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
