January 13, 2020 | Softball
As we inch closer to the 2020 season beginning, take a moment to get to know another one of the newcomers on the Oregon State softball squad roster. Today get to know more about Xiao Gin. Xiao is a freshman this season that plays infield and is a right-handed pitcher. Xiao also is the youngest on the team after graduating from San Luis Obispo High School a year early to become a Beaver!
What is your favorite thing about playing at Oregon State?
My favorite thing about OSU is the family like community that you feel when you are on campus.
How would you describe what it's like playing for Coach Berg and her staff?
It has been really fun so far to be able to work with all of the coaches and being instructed by one of the best in the world. It is an honor to be able to say that a four-time Olympian is my coach.
At what age did you know you wanted to play softball in college? What made you realize that?
I was probably around the age of seven or eight when I told my parents I wanted to be like the women playing on TV, but it was about when I was 12 when I really wanted to pursue it.
What is your major and what do you enjoy about it?
I am majoring in Kinesiology. I like how many different career paths are available for me to choose from it.
Who has had the biggest influence on your softball career?
There are so many people that have influenced me and my softball career. Every coach has taught me something that I still carry with me today. I would say that my parents have influenced my career the most because they have sacrificed so much for me to be able to play the game that I love.
What is the best thing about living in Corvallis?
The best part about living in Corvallis is being a part of Beaver Nation.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I like throwing pottery on the wheel and baking!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Europe either in Prague with my sister or in Spain.
Do you have any pregame rituals or traditions?
I do! I always put my uniform on left then right, and I wear the same scrunchie every day for practice and games.
What is your favorite movie or TV show to watch?
"Grey's Anatomy"
If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I would have dinner with my great grandmother to learn more about their history and their journey of traveling to the States from China.
The Oregon State softball team opens the 2020 season in Las Vegas, Nev. on February 7-9 taking on Southern Utah, UNLV and CSUN.
