Beavers take top-five at Bill Dellinger Invitational
September 28, 2019 | Women's Cross Country
SPRINGFIELD, Ore.– The Beaver cross country team wrapped up action at the Bill Dellinger Invitational with a fifth-place finish, scoring 172 points on Saturday afternoon at Pine Ridge Golf Club. Coming into the event, the Beavers were ranked No. 5 in the USTFCCCA West Regional rankings and also received votes in the National Coaches' Poll for the second straight week.
Sophomore Mari Friedman paced a lineup of sixteen Beavers as she finished in 32nd place and ran in her first race of the season. Friedman traversed the 6-kilometer course with a time of 20:36.3 and once again placed herself in the all-time 6K record book as she now sits in ninth place.
The Santa Cruz native already sits at number three in the all-time record books after running a 20:20 in last October's Bronco Invitational.
A strong pack of Beavers helped guide Oregon State to beat out two ranked teams (No. 14 Furman and No. 24 UCLA) on the day as they faced five nationally ranked squads out of the coaches' poll. The top five scorers for the Beavs all finished within a 13-second spread.
"We executed very well today and we were very smart to just take what we could," head coach Louie Quintana said. "We only had about a 25-second gap from one through seven so we showed that our depth is our strength."
After taking first at the season-opening Viking Rust Buster, sophomore Haley Wolf maintained her consistency by finishing 37th overall, navigating the course with a time of 20:42.6. This again places Wolf in the top-ten on the all-time 6K list where she already sits in fifth.
Redshirt junior Lexi Reed, junior Audrey Lookner and freshman Meagen Lowe all finished within the same spread, running 20:49, respectively, to round out the top-five scoring for Oregon State.
Redshirt junior Greta Van Calcar finished in 59th at 21 minutes flat with freshman Gabby Peterson continuing to impress at one second behind Van Calcar to finish in 60th individually. The duo finished sixth and seventh among Beavers. Senior Alyssa Foote competed unattached and ran a 21:15.4 for a 78th place finish.
Redshirt junior Batya Beard raced in her first meet of the season and collected a 90th place finish (21:23.4). Junior Rebecca Ledsham finished twenty seconds behind Beard to finish in 103rd (21:43.5).
A contingent of six Beavers rounded out the scoring for the day with freshman Libby Rinck finishing with a time of 21:58.9. Graduate transfer Erin Dietz finished at 22:07.4 and freshman Emily Perez finished at 22:22.3.
Redshirt sophomore Kate Intile, redshirt junior Maddie Fuhrman and freshman Liv Downing rounded out the scoring for the Beavs as they within five spots of each other.
"We were good today, but we will continue to get better in the next three weeks," Quintana said. "Based on the way we competed today, I'm certain we will move into the national rankings. This team ran like a top-20 team today."
Up Next:
The Beavers return to action next weekend when they travel to Salem, Oregon for the Charles Bowles Invitational. The race will be held at Bush's Pasture Park and is hosted by Willamette University.
