No. 24 Cross Country To Compete at 45th Charles Bowles Invitational
October 02, 2019 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS, Ore. – A duo of Beaver runners will continue their 2019 season this Saturday when they travel to Salem, Ore., to participate in the 45th Annual Charles Bowles Invitational.
The meet will take place at Bush's Pasture Park and will be hosted by Willamette University. The 8K men's race will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 5K race slated to begin at 10:20 a.m.
Head coach Louie Quintana announced that he will utilize freshman Sydni Nedza and sophomore Maddie Fuhrman on Saturday to give them meet experience and bring them back to full strength after suffering minor injuries.
Freshman Sydni Nedza previously ran in the season-opening Viking Rust Buster (4K) where she placed 57th with a time of 16:09.8. As for Fuhrman, the sophomore placed 132nd in last week's Dellinger Invitational (6K) with a 22:40.3.
Last Time Out: The Beavers are coming off a top-five finish at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore., beating out No. 18 Furman and No. 24 UCLA. Oregon State's top-seven runners stayed as a pack as they only had a 25-second split between their respective times. Sophomores Mari Friedman and Haley Wolf led as the top two runners for the Beavers, finishing at 20:36.3 and 20:42.6.
"I don't have a lot of complaints," head coach Louie Quintana said. "We showed our depth. We have to be smart over the next three weeks and manage our training."
Moving On Up: After three weeks of receiving votes, the Beavers checked into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) national polls for the first time in program history. The Beavers sit at No. 24 out of 335 sponsored women's cross country programs after beating out two nationally ranked teams at the Bill Dellinger Invitational.
"It's a little strange," Quintana said. "We've come a long way in a short period of time, for sure. I also know how difficult it is to get into those rankings. In order for us to make the jump we've done since two years ago, we had to improve in a short amount of time."
The Beavers are ranked ahead of Pac-12 foes Utah and UCLA in the national poll. The Beavers still sit at No. 5 in the USTFCCCA West Regional rankings after three weeks of voting.
"It's pretty cool to see that recognition throughout the country."
Natural Newcomers: Oregon State boasts a top-15 recruiting class as reported by The Stride Report with four freshmen already having national championship experience in high school. The Beavers return 11 runners from last year's squad while also bringing in 11 runners, making up an experienced and balanced roster.
The roster is made up of eight freshmen and three transfers. Three of the freshmen hail from California with the transfers coming from Harvard, Colorado and Treasure Valley Junior College. The Viking Rust Buster was a great start for the newcomers as four freshmen finished in the top-10 with two in the top-five.
Freshman Meagen Lowe competed in her first collegiate 6K during Saturday's Bill Dellinger Invitational where she was one of the top-five Beavers to finish. Lowe traversed the course with a time of 20:49.9 to finish in 46th place.
