Hammoude and Messmer to participate.
CORVALLIS – Two Beavers will represent their countries at the 2019 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-19 Women's Softball World Cup in Irvine, Calif. Frankie Hammoude (USA) and incoming freshman, Grace Messmer (Canada) will be present for the event, which will run Aug. 10-17.
The WBSC U-19 Women's Softball World Cup has been staged every two years and features the best 16 junior National Teams spanning all five Olympic continents battling for the title of World Champions at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, Calif.
Hammoude, an All-Freshman selection, batted .270 during her freshman season at OSU with 30 hits, 10 home runs, 17 runs and 31 RBI. She held a .550 slugging percentage and was walked 26 times. Hammoude launched her first career home run in her collegiate debut against CSUN on Feb. 9 and recorded her first grand slam at home against No. 11 Arizona on March 23.
Team USA will look to clinch the third world championship in a row in this age category after defeating Japan in 2015 and 2017. The U-19 WNT is also coming off a historic run at the USA Softball International Cup where the team took home the Bronze Medal after posting a 7-3 record, with wins over two top 10 opponents within the WBSC Softball world rankings.
Messmer signed with Oregon State last fall to join the 2019 incoming freshman class. Messmer is a two-time Provincial and Canada Cup National Champion and was a member of the 2017 Junior National Canadian Team as well. She was a member of the 2016 Champions Team and named the 2017 Player of the Year.
Canada is coming off back-to-back fourth place finishes at the 2015 and 2019 WBSC U-19 Women's Softball World Cup.
The United States is in Group A, and Canada is in Group D. The top two finishers from each group will advance to the eight-team, four-day Super Round. The top two teams from the Super Rounds will compete for the World Cup Final while the third and fourth-place teams will compete for the Bronze Medal.
Free live streaming of all games and live stats will be available throughout the WBSC U-19 World Cup.
