Beavers drop season opener against Cowboys

Sixth year senior Jake Luton threw for three touchdowns and 251 yards while completing 23 passes on the night. The Beaver defense was led by redshirt senior Shawn Wilson with a career-high 12 tackles while fellow redshirt senior Omar Hicks-Onu followed with seven.

The Beavs put together a near pitch-perfect opening drive with the offense driving down the field for 70 yards and collecting four first downs en route to a 29-yard strike from Jake Luton to Isaiah Hodgins. The first touchdown for Hodgins kick-started a big offensive day for the junior.

It was a fast start for both teams as the Cowboys didn't go away easy in the ensuing possession. The Cowboy offense stormed down the field to even the score 7-7 with just under 10 minutes to go in the first quarter.

The Beaver offense put together another promising drive late in the first with kicker Jordan Choukair capping it off with a 30-yard field goal to break the tie 10-7.

Oklahoma State was held to a field goal after a 70-yard drive to open the second quarter which evened the score to 10-10 apiece. The Cowboys added a pair of touchdowns to make it 31-10 before the Beavers closed the half on a positive note with Luton finding sophomore Tyjon Lindsey for a 1-yard strike. The score capped off a 76-yard drive going into the break, bringing the score to 31-16.
The Beaver offense didn't back down early in the second half as Luton found a familiar target in Hodgins for his second touchdown of the game to make the score 38-23 and pull within two scores.

Another Beaver touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter made the score 45-29 with Jack Colletto picking up the 1-yard rush. Oregon State added one more trip into the end zone with a minute remaining with redshirt sophomore Kolby Taylor catching a five-yard pass which finalized the score for the Beavers.

The Beavers face Hawaii next Saturday inside Aloha Stadium. The game will be broadcast on Facebook Live and will kick off at 9:00 p.m. P.T.
