Beavers fall short at Hawai'i, 31-28
September 08, 2019 | Football
Oregon State faced a veteran Hawai'i defense and responded in the first half out of the gate with a variety of different playmakers. The Beavers struck first with a short rush by a familiar target in sophomore Jermar Jefferson who picked up where he left off last season by scoring for the Beavs to go up 7-0 early in the first quarter. Shortly after, Hawai'i evened the score momentarily until senior running back Artavis Pierce showcased his speed and continued the Beavers rushing attack for a 37-yard touchdown run.
Â
Junior Isaiah Hodgins picked up his career one-hundreth catch early in the contest and came through with timely receptions throughout the first half. A memorable and tough-earned catch at the beginning of the second quarter gave Oregon State their third score of the game to go up 21-7. Hodgins used an impressive tip-toe maneuver across the sideline to score which prompted the television broadcasters to hail the receiver as "the real deal." Hodgins finished with seven receptions and one touchdown for 96 yards.
It wasn't an easy task to contain Hawaii receiver JoJo Ward who earned his second touchdown on the night to pull the Rainbow Warriors within a score in a fast-paced first half. However, the Beavers continued to respond with Luton first finding redshirt senior Kolby Taylor on third-and-long to bring the Beavers within striking distance. The rushing attack rolled along the next play with Pierce finding the end zone for his second touchdown of the night and giving the Beavers a two-score lead until Hawai'i found the end zone just before heading into the break.
Hawai'i responded in the second half by evening the score 28-28 in the third quarter and then earned a late field goal which brought the final score to 31-28.
The Beaver defense was led by redshirt sophomore Avery Robert's nine tackles followed by fellow redshirt sophomore Jaydon Grant as well as sophomore Nahshon Wright with six tackles apiece.
