Beavers Take Down Lazio Select 103-43
ROME, Italy – Saturday was a busy day for the Oregon State women's basketball team, as the squad spent the morning taking in the sights, before hitting the court in the evening.
The day started with a tour of the Vatican City, as the team was able to see the Sistine Chapel, the Papal Palace and St. Peter's Basilica.
"Today was so amazing," said sophomore Patricia Morris. "Getting to see the Sistine Chapel was my favorite part of the Vatican. Getting to see it in person and getting to experience Michelangelo's art was special. The art really seemed to come to life, and that was amazing to see."
From there the focus shifted to basketball, as the Beavers took on Lazio Select at the Arena Altero Felci. Jasmine Simmons led Oregon State with 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting in a 103-43 win.
Five Beavers finished in double-figures. Destiny Slocum tallied 16 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Kennedy Brown notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow freshman Taylor Jones recorded 13 points and five rebounds.
Mikayla Pivec filled the stat sheet, finishing with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.
"It was great to get back out there for a game," Simmons said. "It was fantastic for our first game on the court. The ball moved really well, the way we ran the floor and our defensive pressure. It was really a phenomenal effort."
The Beavers exploded out of the gate, as they took a 34-6 lead in at the end of the first quarter. Oregon State headed to the break up 54-16, on its way to the 60-point win.
The Beavers will head to Florence on Sunday, as the squad continues its journey north. The team's next game will come in Tuesday, when it faces Pozano Basket.
