August 14, 2019 | Men's Golf
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. – Oregon State rising junior Spencer Tibbits advanced to match play at the prestigious U.S. Amateur on Wednesday.
Tibbits shot an even-par 70 on Pinehurst No. 4 on Monday and followed that with a 1-over 71 on the famed Pinehurst No. 2 to finish the 36-hole stroke play in a tie for 12th place with a 1-over 141. Play was halted Tuesday due to darkness but was completed early Wednesday morning.
"I've never played a course that is so demanding off the tee, into the greens and on and around the greens," Tibbits said about Pinehurst No. 2. "You have to hit every shot so solid to have any chance of setting yourself up for the next one. It's mentally exhausting."
The 119th U.S. Amateur featured 312 of the world's best amateur golfers from 27 different countries competing at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. The top 64 players after 36 holes of stroke play advance to match play, which begins at 7 a.m. PT on Wednesday.
Tibbits is the No. 17 seed and will face No. 48 seed Eduard Rousaud in the opening round of match play with the players teeing off at 7:55 a.m. PT.
Here is the week's match play schedule with the first five days being played at Pinehurst No. 2. The 36-hole final on Sunday will be played on Pinehurst No. 4 and Pinehurst No. 2. Live television coverage will be on FS1 from 1-4 p.m. PT Wednesday through Friday, noon-3 p.m. on Fox Saturday and 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Fox Sunday.
Wednesday: Round of 64
Thursday: Round of 32 and Round of 16

Tibbits is coming off a sensational sophomore season with the Beavers. He posted a scoring average of 71.65, the sixth lowest in program history, fired 15 sub-par rounds, with six of those in the 60's, including a career-best 6-under 66 in the second round of the Showdown In The Rockies.
A native of Vancouver, Wash., Tibbits became the first Oregon State golfer to receive All-Pac-12 honors since David Fink in 2014. He also earned Pac-12 All-Academic recognition in his first eligible year for his 3.27 cumulative GPA in university exploratory studies.
Tibbits also qualified for the U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach, Calif., and won the 110th Oregon Amateur Championship.
Shawn Lu, a rising senior, also competed at the 119th U.S. Amateur and shot an 8-over 71-77--148 in stroke play.
Championship History
The U.S. Amateur Championship is the oldest USGA championship and it was created in 1895 because of a controversy. In 1894, two clubs -- Newport (R.I.) Golf Club and New York's St. Andrew's Golf Club -- had conducted invitational tournaments to attract the nation's top amateur players. Both clubs proclaimed their winners as the national champion, while Charles Blair Macdonald, a prominent player and course architect, was the runner-up in both. Before the final day of the St. Andrew's tournament, it was announced that an association composed of all the clubs in the United States would be formed in the ensuing months. This new national governing body would oversee a universally recognized championship and create a written set of rules.
With that, representatives from Newport Golf Club, St. Andrew's Golf Club, The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., and Chicago Golf Club founded the USGA on Dec. 22, 1894, and the inaugural U.S. Amateur Championship was conducted the following year, along with the U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Amateur. The Amateur and Open Championships were conducted at Newport Golf Club during the same week of October and Macdonald became the first U.S. Amateur champion. Since the inaugural event, the U.S. Amateur has enjoyed an illustrious history of great champions, including Bob Jones, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods. In 1930, Jones completed his Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Woods, in 1996, became the first to win three consecutive Amateur titles.
