July 01, 2019 | Baseball
Season Overview
Oregon State finished the 2019 season with a 36-20-1 overall record and 21-8 mark in Pac-12 Conference play. The Beavers set a school record by hosting the Corvallis Regional for the third consecutive season. Oregon State has now posted a winning record in 15 consecutive seasons. The postseason appearance also marked the 13th in the last 15 seasons for the Beavers.
Canham Named Head Coach
Mitch Canham was named Oregon State's next head coach on June 13, less than two weeks after the Beavers played in the Corvallis Regional. Canham had spent the last 3 1/2 years as a manager in the Minor Leagues in the Seattle Mariners organization. He had just led Double-A Arkansas to a North Division first-half title in the Texas League prior to Oregon State's announcement. Canham was a three-year letterwinner at OSU, leading the Beavers to three consecutive trips to Omaha and National Championships in 2006 and 2007. He was also an All-American in 2007 and a CoSIDA Academic All-American the same year.
Mr. Everything
It would be hard to find an award that Adley Rutschman did not win in 2019. He was named the Golden Spikes Award Winner, the Dick Howser Trophy Recipient and the Buster Posey Award Winner. He was named the National Player of the Year by D1Baseball.com, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and the ABCA. Rutschman was also a unanimous First-Team All-American while being named the Pac-12's Player of the Year and Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
First Overall
Adley Rutschman also made history when he went first overall to the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on June 3. It was the second consecutive season the Orioles took a Beaver in the first round, following Cadyn Grenier in 2018. Rutschman is the first catcher drafted first overall since Joe Mauer in 2001 by Minnesota.
MLB Draft
Overall, Oregon State had seven players selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Joining Rutschman were Beau Philip (second round, Atlanta), Grant Gambrell (third round, Kansas City), Brandon Eisert (18th round, Toronto), Bryce Fehmel (21st round, San Francisco), Tyler Malone (27th round, San Diego) and Dylan Pearce (31st round, St. Louis).
The Bullpen
The Oregon State bullpen was stellar in 2019, posting a 1.71 earned run average in 231 2/3 innings of work. The 'pen struck out 254 batters to 96 walks and opponents posted just 152 hits. Ten different Beavers appeared in relief in 2019.
Home Attendance
Oregon State has one of the best home field advantages in the country thanks to an incredible fanbase. Oregon State totaled 106,327 in attendance, pushing the team over 100,000 for the third consecutive season. The 2018 Beavers set the single-season record with 111,427, and the 2019 club's 106,327 ranks second in school history.
Third In The Pac-12
Oregon State finished in third place in Pac-12 Conference action at 21-8. The Beavers won 20 or more games for the third consecutive season. Both Oregon State and Stanford are the only Pac-12 teams to win 20 or more for three consecutive seasons since the then-Pac-10 unified prior to the 1999 season.
