Adley Rutschman Named A Golden Spikes Finalist

DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State junior catcher Adley Rutschman is one of four finalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced on Wednesday.
The honor continues a big day for Rutschman, who was named the Pac-12's Player of the Year in addition to earning Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Rutschman will now have an opportunity to be recognized as the amateur player of the year; the winner will be announced June 13 on ESPN2's "Baseball Tonight" as the Detroit Tigers prepare to take on the Kansas City Royals at TD Ameritrade Park.
The Sherwood, Ore., native is a prime contender for the honor, thanks to a .419 batting average (fourth nationally), a national-best .580 on-base percentage and .765 slugging percentage. He also leads the nation with 73 walks, and has a career-best 17 home runs with 57 runs batted in, nine doubles and 56 runs scored.
He's also been phenomenal behind the plate, as evidenced by his defensive honor. Opponents are successful on just 13-of-26 steal attempts and he's posted a .991 fielding percentage.
He is joined by fellow finalists JJ Bleday (Vanderbilt), Andrew Vaughn (California) and Noah Song (Navy).
Rutschman is the second Golden Spikes finalist in Oregon State's history, joining Michael Conforto (2014).

A final ballot will be sent to the Golden Spikes Award voting body consisting of national baseball media, select professional baseball personnel, previous Golden Spikes Award winners and select USA Baseball staff, totaling a group of over 200 voters. From Wednesday, May 29, through Monday, June 10, the voting body will cast their final vote for the Golden Spikes Award winner and fan voting will simultaneously be open on GoldenSpikesAward.com. Selections made by the voting body will carry a 95 percent weight of each athlete's total, while fan votes will account for the remaining five percent.
