Beavers’ Rally Falls Short Vs. Gonzaga
April 30, 2019 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Adley Rutschman hit his 15th home run of the season and Zack Zalesky drove in two in a ninth-inning rally but Oregon State dropped a 6-3 decision to Gonzaga Tuesday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Â
Zalesky hit a two-run double in the ninth, and the Beavers (31-11-1 overall) later loaded the bases but Gonzaga's Daniel Naughton got pinch hitter Greg Fuchs swinging at strike three to end the game.
Â
Rutschman hit his 26th career home run in the fourth to put the Beavers on the board after a three-run top half of the inning by the Bulldogs. Gonzaga, however, pushed ahead further with two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Â
Dylan Pearce made his first career start and retired the first nine batters he faced. He, however, got into a jam in the fourth, and Gonzaga's Troy Johnston hit a two-run home run in the inning to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Pearce, who was charged with the loss to drop to 1-2, was relieved by Andrew Walling after throwing 36 pitches.
Â
Nick Trogrlic-Iverson worked five innings for the Bulldogs (24-17), and held the Beavers to two hits and a run. He picked up the win to improve to 2-2 this season.
Â
Next Game
Oregon State takes on Oklahoma State in a non-conference series that opens Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The series opener begins at 5:35 p.m. PT.
Â
To Third
Adley Rutschman's fourth-inning home run marked the 15th of his season, tying him with Al Hunsinger (1981) for the third-most in a single season at Oregon State. It was also the 26th of his career, moving him into sole possession of eighth.
Â
And Tied For First
Adley Rutschman walked in the ninth inning for the 55th time this season. That tied Michael Conforto (2014) for the most in a single season by a Beaver.
