April 27, 2019 | Softball
Eugene, Ore. – Izzy Owen and Camryn Ybarra both go yard for the Beavers to help OSU clinch the first Civil War Series win since 2012 with an 8-6 victory over the Ducks on Saturday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Shelby Weeks and Maia Rader led the team each going 3-for-4 each recording a double and a run for the Beavers. Ybarra added two hits, while Kayleen Shafer, Michelle Sass and Owen each had one hit.
Owen finished with three RBIs and Ybarra added two. Missy Nunes and Sass each also contributed a RBI for the Beavers.
Weeks started the game with a double she dropped into shallow left field. Weeks then had a delayed stolen base after Oregon tried to get her at second with a tag, but she took off to third instead.
Ybarra followed that with a full-count home run down the right-field line scoring Weeks and giving the Beavers an early 2-0 lead.
Oregon evened the score at 2-a-piece, in the third inning before Mariah Mazon struck out a batter with the bases loaded.
OSU didn't wait long to score the go-ahead run following Maia Rader hitting a single into right field. Weeks followed this with a single into center field that had Rader going on contact. Rader showed off her speed and made it all the way home following an error by the Duck's center fielder that also allowed Weeks to advance to second.
Owen blasted a three-run homer, the first of her career, in the top of the fifth to extend Oregon State's lead to 6-2. Owen brought in Lovie Lopez, who was pinch running for Hammoude, and Nunes. Hammoude and Nunes both got on after being hit by a pitch.
The Ducks added one run in the bottom of the fifth, but OSU quickly rebounded scoring two in the top of the sixth.
Things started when Fallon Molnar pinch hit for Jessica Garcia and reached on an error by the Ducks first baseman. Garcia reentered and quickly stole second base, her 15th base of the season. Ybarra singled to center while advancing Garcia to third. Karla Calderon pinch ran for Ybarra and advanced to second following Hammoude being walked. Nunes scored Garcia whiling reaching on a fielder's choice as Calderon was out at second.
Shafer also reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning while Hammoude was out at third, but due to a fielding error by the first baseman, Nunes was able to advance to third putting her in scoring position for Michelle Sass to hit a RBI single into center field, extending the Beavers lead to 8-3.
Oregon scored three more times in the seventh before the Beavers took the game, 8-6 and claimed the series victory.
The Beaver defense put up a strong battle throughout the game forcing Oregon to leave at least two runners stranded in the first three innings. In total, OSU forced the Ducks to leave 10 batters stranded.
