Beavers Fall to No. 2 Bruins
April 18, 2019 | Softball
Corvallis, Ore. – Shelby Weeks stole her 57th career base to tie the OSU program record as Oregon State falls to No. 2 UCLA on Thursday night, 8-1.
Weeks began the bottom of the first inning with a single to UCLA's shortstop. She then took off to second and slid under the tag to record her 57th career and 14th season stolen base. Jessica Garcia singled down the third-base line to score Weeks, giving the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
OSU's defense held the Bruins scoreless through the first four innings of play. This was made possible by sophomore Mariah Mazon striking out seven batters in those innings, including three in the fourth inning. Oregon State was also impressive in the second inning when Izzy Owen fielded a bunt and made the throw to Missy Nunes at second to get the lead runner, and Michelle Sass made an underhand toss to Nunes right after to again get the lead runner and hold off UCLA's attempts.
UCLA came back in the fifth after having the lead-off batter reach on an error. UCLA scored two runs in the fifth. The Bruins added four in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Oregon State tried to come back in the bottom of the fifth after Owen walked and Ashton Phillips reached on a fielder's choice, but nothing transpired.
Mazon falls to 12-11 on the season after pitching 5.0 innings and striking out eight batters. Meehra Nelson pitched 2.0 innings and allowed only one hit.
