No. 18 Beavers Grab Six Wins at Stanford Invitational
April 14, 2019 | Men's Rowing
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Six Oregon State men's rowing crews, currently ranked No. 18 in the country, picked up six wins at Redwood Shores for the Stanford Invitational across competition on Saturday and Sunday.
The Beavers rowed in three different sessions across the two-day event against three schools, two of which are ranked. No. 14 Wisconsin tops the list, with No. 22 Hobart and Santa Clara rounding out the field of competition for OSU.
"Two more days of racing, three more 2K's against some top crews in the country," said head coach Gabe Winkler. "We put down six victories in one weekend, that's pretty fun. This morning was big; I asked the guys if they had any doubts before the race to which they emphatically responded "No." They stayed with their gunwales and pulled for each other to get a big win."
Saturday Morning
The Beavers opened the weekend with the No. 14-ranked Badgers of Wisconsin early Saturday morning. Wisconsin managed to win all three of the races; V8, 2V8, 3V8.
The Beavers 3V8 began the racing for OSU in the first race of the day traversing the course in 6-minutes, 24.1-seconds. UW crossed the finish line in 6-minutes, 2.3-seconds for the win.
Oregon State's 2V8 was also outpaced, however the Beavers were right in the race until the end with a time of 5-minutes, 59.4-seconds. Wisconsin was a couple seconds faster at 5-minutes, 56.5-seconds.
In the final race of the first session, Oregon States V8 got the chance to hit the water. The Badgers were again victorious, but the Beavers were outpaced by only 2.4-seconds. OSU's boat consisting of Hunter Smith, Alex Carlton, Jacob Randall, Tyler Gray, Jacoby Wilson, Nils Patrick, and Nick Taylor and coxswained by Ben Garrison, finished with a time of 5-minutes, 43.8-seconds, while UW won with a time of 5-minutes, 41.4-seconds.
Saturday Afternoon
The Beavers' 3V8 again led off the racing in the afternoon session on Saturday. OSU picked up its first win of the weekend over Santa Clara by nearly 10-seconds. Powered by Hunter Rust, Trygve Nordby, Austin DeMartine, Alex Hernandez, Christian Touhey, Zachary Smith, Dalton Lundry, Josh Hocker, under the direction of Andrew Bullock, Oregon State traversed the 2,000-meter course in 6-minutes, 11.7-seconds.
It was the same song and dance in the 2V8 with nearly a 13-second margin of victory for the Beavers. Consisting of Emerson Chase, Max McDonald, Nick Touchette, Henry Hebson, Jacob Hart, Samuel Foltz, Zach Niedermeyer and Camron Gharib, coxswained by Desiree Odgers, OSU powered through the course in a time of 5-minutes, 57.3-seconds, while Santa Clara managed a time of 6-minutes, 10.2-seconds.
Oregon State completed the afternoon sweep with the Varsity 8 taking the win in the final race of the first day. OSU had a margin of victory of just over six seconds, winning with a time of 6-minutes, 4.2-seconds.
Sunday Morning
Squaring off with No. 22 Hobart College on the final morning of the Stanford Invitational the Beavers were again perfect picking up wins in the V8, 2V8.
There was an addition to the 3V8 race as UC Davis joined in for a three-team race with OSU and Santa Clara. The Beavers crew smashed both competitors with a time of 6-minutes, 51.9-seconds, outpacing Santa Clara (7:10.6) and UC Davis (7:14.3).
Hobart narrowed the margin in the 2V8 race, but Oregon State proved to be too much as the Beavers picked up their fifth win of the weekend. OSU finished with a time of 6-minutes, 24.7-seconds, while Hobart College finished at 6-minutes, 31.2-seconds.
The final race of the weekend proved to be the closest winning-margin for the Beavers of only 3.3-seconds. OSU's V8 was neck-and-neck with No. 22 Hobart with the Beavers narrowly winning with a time of 6-minutes, 5.3-seconds.
