Beavers Win With Strong Defensive Performance
March 10, 2019 | Softball
Los Angeles, Calif. – Oregon State softball captured a 2-0 victory over Western Carolina following a strong defensive battle put together by the Beavers.
Oregon State scored in the bottom of the first inning after Lovie Lopez started with a lead-off walk. Jessica Garcia laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lopez to second who then made it to third off a passed ball. Frankie Hammoude hit a RBI single to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
Oregon State recorded another run in the sixth following Hammoude getting a lead-off walk that Karla Calderon pinch ran for. Kayleen Shafer stepped up to the plate following Hammoude and blasted a double into center field that scored Calderon.
The true show came on the defensive side starting when Shafer popped up and tracked a WCU foul ball into the net for the first out. Garcia then robbed a potential home run in the top of the third that would have evened the score a one-a-piece.
Mariah Mazon came up big in the fourth catching a pop-up bunt that limited a runner from advancing to second followed by Camryn Ybarra making a diving grab up the middle that she flipped to Maia Rader at second to get the lead runner. Freshman, Ashton Phillips made the final out of the inning diving backwards to catch a fly ball at the right-field fence.
The Beavers made another impressive play in the top of the seventh inning when a ball was hit hard at Missy Nunes' glove that deflected into Rader's glove that Rader was able to toss back to Nunes at third to get the lead runner.
Mazon earned the win following five strike outs in 5.0 innings to improve to 8-3 on the season, and senior, Meehra Nelson gets credit for her first save of the season after pitching the last 2.0 innings and striking out one batter.
The Beavers are back in action at Arizona State next weekend to open Pac-12 play.
