Five Beavers Recognized By NCBWA

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman and pitchers Kevin Abel, Bryce Fehmel, Jake Mulholland and Brandon Eisert have all been named preseason All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), as announced on Tuesday. Rutschman, Abel, Fehmel and Mulholland were named to the first team while Eisert was named to the third team.
Rutschman, a junior in 2019, earned preseason honors after batting .408 with a school-record 102 hits and 83 runs batted in last season. He hit nine home runs, tallied 22 doubles and walked 53 times. Rutschman was named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2018 College World Series after setting a series record with 17 hits.
Abel, meanwhile, became the first pitcher to win four games at the College World Series, claiming the last victory thanks to a two-hit shutout of Arkansas in the championship finale. He ended the year 8-1 overall with a 2.88 earned run average in 23 games. He was the only freshman in the nation with more than 100 strikeouts, tallying 108.
Fehmel, a senior in 2019, went 10-1 in 2018, posting a 3.19 ERA in 20 games, all starts. He issued just 27 walks in 113 innings. His 26 career wins tie him for 10th all-time at OSU and his .839 winning percentage (26-5) ranks fourth.
Mulholland, a junior in 2019, saved 16 games last season, tying for the Pac-12 Conference lead. He finished the season 2-2 with a 2.20 ERA, striking out 42 to just 11 walks in 42 innings. Mulholland is at 22 career saves entering the season in a tie for third in a career at Oregon State.
Eisert, from Aloha, Ore., helped anchor the Oregon State bullpen in 2018, going 5-3 with a 2.53 ERA and five saves in 27 appearances. The lefty struck out 14 over three games at the 2018 College World Series, scattering 11 hits and four runs in 14 1/3 innings. In 48 appearances with the Beavers, he is 10-3 with a 2.43 ERA.
Rutschman (finance), Mulholland (business administration), Fehmel (marketing) and Eisert (marketing) earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honors last season. Abel (speech communication) was not eligible due to being in his first year at Oregon State.
Oregon State enters the 2019 season ranked in the top 10 in all six major polls. The Beavers have occupied the top 10 for 35 consecutive weeks dating back to the start of the 2017 season.
