Tibbits Leads Beavers At Southwestern Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Spencer Tibbits fired a 3-under 69 in the final round of the Southwestern Invitational on Tuesday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team.
The Beavers finished in seventh place in the 12-team field with a 16-over 295-292-293--880 at the par-72, 6,992-yard North Ranch Country Club.
"Overall we did a lot of really good things this week," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We had our chances to have a higher finish but unfortunately made a few too many loose swings that resulted in big numbers. In the big picture I'm really excited about the progress these guys have made since the fall."
Tibbits used his excellent final round to move up the leaderboard and finish in ninth place with a 2-under 74-71-69--214. It's the fifth top-10 finish of his young career.
"This is the second event in a row where Spencer did a good job of getting off to a slow start and playing well over the last 36 holes," Reehoorn said. "He is continuing to grow and learn the first 18 holes don't make the tournament."
Sean Kato finished in a tie for 32nd place with a 7-over 76-71-76--223 and Kyosuke Hara was a stroke back to finish in a tie for 37th place with an 8-over 73-78-73--224.
Freshmen Nolan Thoroughgood (10-over 72-72-82--226) and Carson Barry (21-over 79-83-75--237) finished in a tie for 46th and 59th, respectively.
USC won the team title with a 4-under 860 and Justin Suh of USC claimed medalist honors with a 12-under 204.
The Beavers will return to action Sunday, March 10 to Tuesday, March 12 at the Bandon Dunes Collegiate in Bandon, Ore.
"As we prepare for Bandon the next two weeks I'm looking forward to getting home to continue working with our team while we compete and push one another to see who will be in the top five," Reehoorn said.
