Stockton, Calif. – Oregon State's softball program wrapped up the weekend with an 8-0 victory over Pacific to improve to 12-2 overall on the season. This is the best start in program history since 2016.
Senior Meehra Nelson started in the circle for the Beavers and recorded five strike outs in the circle in the first three innings, including three in the bottom of the second.
Offensively, freshman Frankie Hammoude got things going in the top of the fourth inning with a leadoff double into right-center field. Lovie Lopez came in to pinch run for Hammoude followed by Michelle Sass getting hit by a pitch to put two on as Kayleen Shafer stepped up to the plate.
Shafer fired a single up through the middle of the field that allowed Lopez to score. Sass and Shafer each advanced a base on a bad throw from Pacific's centerfielder to the catcher, trying to get Lopez out, be on second and third. Sass would score on a fielder's choice when Izzy Owen sent one right back to the pitcher. The pitcher tried to go home with it, but the catcher dropped the throw.
Maia Rader hit a RBI-double to bring Shafer home before Shelby Weeks was walked to load the bases for Jessica Garcia. Garcia capitalized on the situation hitting a single through the right side driving in Owen. The Beavers tallied a total of four runs in the top of the fourth.
OSU struck again in the top of the seventh when Sass hit a double into left center. Shafer reached on an error by the Tiger's third baseman and both Shafer and Sass would advance another base off the throw. Karla Calderon came in to pinch run for Shafer followed by Owen hitting a single into left field that would score Sass.
Calderon scored the Beaver's sixth run on a throwing error from Pacific's shortstop. Rader recorded another single to have two runners on when Garcia hit a single to left field, scoring both Owen and Rader to give OSU the final two runs of the game.
Nelson struck out two more batters in the bottom of the seventh to finish with eight on the game and earn her fourth win of the season.
Oregon State is on the road again next weekend in Norman, Okla. to take on Oklahoma and Louisiana.
