Beavers Post Top-Five Finish At Saint Mary’s Invitational
November 06, 2019 | Men's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Oregon State men's golf team capped a sensational fall season with a fifth-place showing at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Wednesday.
The Beavers were forced to compete with only four players in the final round, but equaled the best score of the day in tough weather conditions to climb three spots and finish fifth in the 16-team field with an even-par 280-291-281--852 at the par-71, 7,002-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course.
All-Pac-12 golfer Spencer Tibbits missed the final two rounds of the tournament due to illness. He entered the event tied with Carson Barry with a team-best scoring average of 70.70.
The Beavers finished their fall season with team titles at the Hamptons Intercollegiate and Oregon State Invitational, a win over Nevada in a 36-hole event, a fourth-place effort at the competitive Husky Invitational and a fifth-place finish while short-handed at the Saint Mary's Invitational.
Tibbits was the co-champion at the Husky Individual, Shawn Lu was the medalist at the Hamptons Intercollegiate and Barry took home the trophy at the Oregon State Invitational.
Oregon State was ranked No. 10 in the nation in the latest Golfstat poll.
"We've played some strong golf this fall, but today was by far the most impressive round we have played all year," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The mental toughness it takes to shoot under par in cold, foggy and windy conditions when you know every shot counts is something our guys can pull from in the future.
"At some point in the spring we will face a much more difficult round and they will be able to pull from this experience as knowing they can handle anything that comes their way."
Sophomore Carson Barry stayed this fall with a tie for third place finish, posting a 6-under 69-71-67--207. In the last three tournaments, he's finished tied for second (Hamptons Intercollegiate), first (Oregon State Invitational) and tied for third (Saint Mary's Invitational), respectively.
The Eagle, Idaho native was under par in 10 of his 13 fall rounds and recently became the first-ever Oregon State student-athlete to be named the Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Month.
Senior Kyosuke Hara had his best round of the tourney on the final day, shooting a 3-under 68, that moved him 23 spots up the leaderboard to a tie for 29th place with a 1-over 72-74-68--214.
Sophomore Sean Kato also finished in tie for 29th place with a 1-over 71-68-75--214 and senior Shawn Lu finished in a tie for 53rd with a 6-over 70-78-71--219.
Tibbits carded a 1-under 70 in the first round before being forced to withdraw due to an illness.
Freshman Jackson Lake competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 16th place with a 2-under 68-72-71--211. He finished in a tie for fifth at the Husky Invitational and a tie for 13th at the Oregon State Invitational, while competing as an individual at both events.
Colorado State won the tourney with a 25-under 827 and Peter Kuest of BYU won the individual title with an 11-under 202.
