Oregon State improves to 7-0 on the season
MIAMI, Fla. – Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck notched his 500th career victory, as the seventh-ranked Beavers took down Liberty 68-55 Saturday afternoon in Miami, Fla.
"It was a battle today," Rueck said. "You have to give Liberty a lot of credit. They came out with great energy, and they put their players in a position to be successful. It was a gut-check at halftime, and our team responded. We took control of the game in the second half, and in the fourth quarter our defense was the difference maker."
The victory extends the Beavers' undefeated start to the campaign, as the team moves to 7-0 on the year.
Freshman Kennedy Brown set a career-high with 16 points, and matched a career-high with nine rebounds. Mikayla Pivec recorded 14 points, six rebounds, six assist and three steals.
Aleah Goodman hit four of her eight shot attempts to finish with 13 points and four assists. Goodman and Pivec both earned All-Tournament honors.
Destiny Slocum scored eight points, while Taylor Jones also tallied eight points.
Liberty took a 13-11 edge into the second quarter, and went up 30-25 at the half.
Oregon State battled back to level the score just over two minutes into the third quarter. The Beavers took the lead on a Kennedy Brown 3-pointer shortly thereafter, as part of a 12-2 run.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the late parts of the third. Oregon State out-scored Liberty 22-13 in the period to head to the closing frame in front 47-43.
OSU extended the lead to eight, on its way to a 55-48 edge at the fourth-quarter media timeout. Oregon State brought the advantage to double-figures with a minute to play, on its way to a 13-point win.
The Beavers will return home Friday for a matchup with Hawaii. That game will tip at 7 p.m.
